What each method costs and buys

Drain cleaning is priced by the tool, and the tool is chosen by the blockage. A cable punches a hole through a soft obstruction and restores flow. A jetter scours the pipe wall back to its diameter. A camera tells you which one you needed and whether the pipe is worth cleaning at all.

Bands collected from published contractor pricing, 2026-09-04. Ranges only.
MethodTypical bandWhat it buys
Sink or tub, accessible cleanout$120–350Flow restored on a soft stoppage
Main line cable, exterior cleanout$180–500A hole through roots or paper
Main line, roof vent access$300–700Same, from the only access there is
Hydro jetting$400–1,200Pipe wall scoured back to diameter
Camera inspection$150–500Cause, location and pipe condition

Cable restores flow; a jetter restores the pipe

That distinction is the whole conversation about the second visit. A cabled line with a grease-coated wall flows today and blocks again in months. Say which one the customer is buying.

Why the second visit costs more

The first call is priced as a stoppage. The second call on the same line inside a few months is priced as a diagnosis, because the honest answer is no longer "clear it" — it is "find out why it keeps happening". That means a camera, and usually a jetter afterwards.

Shops that price the second visit like the first end up cabling the same line four times a year for a customer who is increasingly unhappy and a technician who is increasingly certain the pipe has a belly. Nobody wins that arrangement.

Access is the biggest variable

An exterior cleanout at grade is a fifteen-minute setup. No cleanout means pulling a toilet or working from a roof vent, and a roof in winter carries a safety cost as well as a time one. That is why the same blockage is a different price at two houses on the same street.

If a house has no accessible cleanout, adding one is often the best money the customer will spend on drainage. Quote it while you are there.

When cleaning is the wrong answer

Three findings turn a cleaning job into a replacement conversation. Roots returning within a season means open joints. A belly holding water on camera means grade, and grade is not fixable from inside. Orangeburg or badly-scaled cast iron means the pipe is the problem, not its contents.

At that point the number to put beside the annual cleaning bill is the replacement cost, and the comparison is usually shorter than people expect.

What to say on the invoice

Name the access point used, the tool, the distance to the obstruction and what came back. "Cabled main from exterior cleanout, obstruction at 38 ft, roots recovered" is a record that supports the next recommendation. "Cleared drain" supports nothing.

If a camera was run, hand over the footage or a still. It is the difference between an opinion and evidence when the replacement quote follows.
